HISTORY OF OPERATING SYSTEMS

Operating systems is the heart of modern technological improvement and advancement. Operating systems set the rules and what can or cannot be done on a PC and also detects it PC limitations. However the origin and existence of the operating system is traced back to decades ago. The first and earliest electronic digital computer was developed during the early 1940’s without an operating system. Nevertheless the first operating system was developed after this in 1956 by Robert L Patrick called the GM-NAA I/O:this was developed for general motors, for use ontheir IBM 704 mainframe. This early OS was primarily designed to automatically switch to the next job once its current job was completed. It was used on about 40 of the IBM 704 mainframes.

Furthermore, the MCP in 1961, DOS in 1966, UNIX in 1969, CP/M in 1973, BSD in 1977, MS-DOS in 1981 down to apple’s Mac-OS in 1984 to the recent 2012 windows 8 are all developed from and based on the idea and concept of Robert L Patrick’s GM-NAA I/O.
More details and information on the whole OS ever developed inclusive of their video can be found in the article written to remark the 2013 international programmer’s day through the link below.
