A master degree in machine learning is available online for free. Using this course, you can learn from home the skills and knowledge necessary to write simple MATLAB software that will develop statistical recognition patterns. To actually take this course in person you may have to pay as much as $50,000. This will give you the added benefit of having a masters degree from Stanford university. According to the instructor Andrew Ng, job prospects for machine learning skills are excellent right now particularly in silicon valley. Applications include voice recognition, spam filtering, robot movement etc.
